In what was a David and Goliath story today, Mark Caljouw slayed the giant at the Orleans Masters Super 100 by beating Jan O Jorgensen and in doing so confirmed his medal possibilities for the upcoming European Championships.

Caljouw has been steadily improving over the past 18 months and now sits as the 6th best European in the men’s singles world ranking with only two non-Danish players ahead of him. Today the Dutchman fully justified his ranking beating Jorgensen in two tight games.

It was Jorgensen who got to game point first in the opening set a position you would have expected the Dane to convert. However, The Dane blew three game points and at 22-22 it was Caljouw who seized the initiative to take the opener 24-22.

-It was important for me just to stay in the moment and play point by point and worry so much about the outcome. This was something we discussed before and it worked for me at the end of the first set.

The second game was a hard-hitting full throttle affair with emotions boiling over at one point when Jorgensen issued a lesson in court manners to his younger opponent over the delivery of a used shuttle to the service judge.

Once again it was Caljouw who stayed in the present to take the match after saving one game point with a 23-21 win to set up a semi final match against top seed Sameer Verma.

-It’s a great feeling to win this one. We had a firm plan to play against Jan and it worked. What that plan was I am not going to say but it worked and I am now in the semi-final.

Nohr doubles up for semi final day

Niclas Nohr was the big winner on quarter finals day winning both his mixed doubles and men’s doubles for Denmark. Nohr and partner Sara Thygesen (pictured above) dominated Marvin Seidel and Linda Efler in the first match of the day and the Dane was quick to point out the value of having such a prolific partner alongside him.

-Sara was amazing today she played at a really high level which is great to have beside you on court.

In the final match of the evenings play Nohr had to work much harder alongside Kasper Antonsen to see off the dogged challenge of Gutama and Putra of Indonesia. The Danes came storming back after loosing the opening set to eventually book their semi final spot with a 23-21 win in the deciding game.
