For any European success in the women’s singles, your best bet is with Olympic champion Carolina Marin.

Despite not reaching a final so far in 2018, a semi-final appearance at the Malaysia Masters and quarter-finals in Indonesia and India has given the world number five and a healthy amount of wins. Securing the All England title in 2015 has her remaining as a threat to a women’s singles draw that is fronted by a high-quality Asian field.

Boe and Morgensen looking to make it two titles in 2018

The men’s doubles sees three European pairs in the top ten in the world. The most in-form of those three are world number two Danish pair Mathias Boe and Carsten Morgensen. Winning the Swiss Open earlier in the year has put the former Olympic medallists into the All England with enough expectation to win this for a third time.

Another former winner of this competition is Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. It might not have been a successful season so far for the world number ten pair. But the glory of 2016 will still have them as a contender.

There is another strong Danish challenge, this time in the women’s doubles. Rio Olympics silver medallists Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen go into this year’s event as the tournaments third seeds. A win at the Malaysia Masters and semi-finals in Jakarta and New Delhi sees them as the form pair in the world this year. A win for them will see them as the first European winners of this event since 1981.

Axelsen pulling out sees fellow Danes looking to step up

After the unfortunate withdrawal of world number one singles player Viktor Axelsen, it could be up some of Europe’s rising stars to fill the void.

Fearless youngster Anders Antonsen certainly has the potential to make a breakthrough against a field that is led by a high-quality Asian outfit.

Other notable European players competing are Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus and Jan O. Jorgensen. A semi-final showing at the Malaysia Masters for Vittinghus and runner-up at the Swiss Open for Jorgensen puts them in good stead at being the best of the other European players.

Also involved in the men’s singles are France’s number one player Brice Leverdez and England’s Rajiv Ouseph, who is aiming to give the home crowd something to shout about.

There has not been a European winner of the mixed doubles at the All England since 2005. That saw England’s Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms take the plaudits. In 2018, another English pair leads the way. This time, it is Chris and Gabrielle Adcock. It will be their first tournament of the year.

After what was a memorable 2017, the married pair will be looking to go one better then there semi-final efforts of last year.
