Badminton Europe’s (BEC) Board of Directors are delighted to announce their decision to allocate the 2018 European Senior Championships (ESC18) to the city of Guadalajara, Spain.

From 24-30 September 2018, the major event will take place only 50 kilometers drive from the international airport in Madrid. The city of Guadalajara is a candidate to win the European City of Sport in 2018 and will also host the ESC18.

-  We are delighted to be back in Spain with our European Senior Championships. No doubt this is a popular destination for the players and we do hope for a record entry. The venue is outstanding and will deliver perfect playing conditions. I would like to thank the President of the Spanish Federation, David Cabello and his Director General, Alberto Carazo for facilitating this event in Guadalajara. Also, a word of thanks to the city Council for their enthusiasm and support, Brian Agerbak BEC General Secretary said.

Proud President
David Cabello, President of the Spanish Federation, is proud, that the ESC18 will take place in Spain.

It is an honor for Badminton Spain to be awarded by Badminton Europe to organize 2018 European Senior Championships once again in Spain. After the experience hosting this great event in 2004 (Almuñecar) and 2008 (Punta Umbría) we are sure we will deliver a high level event where European seniors players will be able to enjoy a global experience around our sport, Cabello says.

- This experience will ensure the best environment for the players and it will be powered by the support of a great city as Guadalajara.

A major event

Players will compete in eight different age groups from +35 to +70, which makes it by far the biggest European badminton event in figures. The event will be organized in the venue Pabellón Multiusos de Guadalajara where 5,800 spectators can be seated.

The mayor of Guadalajara is pleased, that the big event will take place in his city.

- On behalf of Guadalajara City Council, it's an honor to host a sporting event of this magnitude in 2018 during which we will hold the title of European City of Sport in recognition of the policies undertaken by the City Council to encourage sports. Guadalajara has become a national and international sports reference. We will do our best to meet the expectations that have been placed in us, Antonio Román Jasanada said.

At the 2016 edition, BEC saw no less than 1.014 participants which was the highest amount ever at any BEC event. Now, the event team hopes to break this record for the edition in 2018.

BEC is excited to move a big and important event such as the ESC to a location with organizers that possess experience within major sports events. Guadalajara has previously hosted other big sports events such as the 2013 World Men’s Handball Championships and the 2016 World Cup Rhythmic Gymnastics.
