The 21-year-old Cyprian is the fifth player announced to start at the BEC Centre of Excellence (COE) from 1 September 2017.

When Nicolaou heard about Badminton Europe’s (BEC) Centre of Excellence-project he applied right away. He participated at the Pre-Selection Camp, in 2016, and the Selection Camp, earlier this year. Today, BEC is happy to announce that he will be a part of the permanent squad in Holbaek.

“I feel so excited and I can't wait to start to train over there with players from all around Europe. This is something that I really want and I feel really lucky that I have the chance to practice in a centre like this.”, he says about getting this opportunity.

He does not have the same possibilities in Cyprus and he feels really motivated to start the training; “Now, I know that I will have the chance to achieve my goals!”

A player does not have to come from a big badminton nation to dream of Olympic gold; and this is exactly what Nicolaou has done since he was 10 years old.

Cyprus Badminton Federation has 1,000 registered players, which provides the young badminton player with limited sparring.

“I joined the Centre of Excellence because, in Cyprus, I don't have sparring players. That's is the main reason of joining. I want to train with players who are better than me and players who will make me push to the limits every single day to improve my level and reach my goals and even more.”, he explains.

The fundamental objective and purpose of the Centre of Excellence is to assist players, like Nicolaou, from minor Member Associations who needs better sparring.

Elias Nicolaou is studying Sports Science and Sport Management, while playing for the club ‘Proodos Kaimakliou’ in Cyprus. But he is not shy to mention that he is very interested in playing in the Danish league once he moves there.

“I will have the chance to play in one of the best Leagues in the world and I really can't wait for that. Also, we will have more coaches and trainers and everything that is needed for someone who want to be a professional badminton player.”
