Denmark’s men’s doubles stars Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have risen to the world no.1 spot once again, replacing Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo at the top. It marks one of the greatest badminton comebacks of all time.

What an incredible recovery from Carsten Mogensen, after he had to undergo a brain surgery to treat the rupture of an aortic aneurysm in his brain during the 2016 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships in Kazan, Russia in February 2016.

Mogensen went back on court at last year’s BCA Indonesia Open Superseries. Exactly twelve months and few tournament’s victories (2017 European Championships, Singapore Open, India Open GP and Yonex French Open) later, Mogensen and his partner Mathias Boe returned to the world number one spot in the latest BWF rankings released on Thursday.

„We are happy, proud and honored to be back as world no. 1. For us this has been a goal since Carsten returned from his illness, exactly one year ago.
I think it's every athletes’ dream to top the world ranking, and it's crazy to think about we have done that for four periods over the last seven years“, the duo wrote on their official Facebook page.

No plans to quit badminton

Boe and Mogensen’s on-court form has been nothing short of remarkable considering Carsten Mogensen’s illness. Now both said that they will not bring an end to their professional careers.

„As long as we feel a motivation, we will go on. There are no plans to quit badminton“, said Carsten Mogensen (34) to Danish tv broadcaster TV2.

And Boe, who will turn 37 next month, added:

„We are hungry for success. We just made a new agreement with our sponsor Yonex. So there are no plans to resign in the near future.

Through to the semi-finals in Jakarta

And the two time European Champions fresh off an inspirational run to the Indonesia Open semi-finals. Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen, seeded second in Jakarta, beat former European Champions Ivan Sozonov and Vladimir Ivanov of Russia 23-21, 21-11 to advance to the last four stage of the Premier World Superseries tournament.

They will now take on Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian in the semi-finals after the Indonesians saw off Thai duo Kedren/Puavaranukroh.

In the other half of the draw, China’s Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan will play their compatriots Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen.
