The opening day of the 47th Portuguese International saw a surprising in-form Nuno Santos, who entered the main draw after having won the qualification stage yesterday. The 30-year-old former international player sensationally moved into the quarter-finals after beating Kestutis Navickas of Lithuania and then Rosario Maddaloni of Italy.

Santos has no world ranking as he is only playing Unversiade tournaments alongside his study of Physical Education. Tomorrow he'll play England's Ben Beckman to book his place in the semi-finals.

Dieter Domke, who played a fantastic European Championships in Sweden, is considered to be the hot favourite to take the men's singles crown in Caldas da Rainha. But first he has to beat local and top seed Pedro Martin in tomorrow's quarters.
