Scott Evans (pictured above) came through two rounds today in men’s singles draw at the Irish Open to put himself into real contention for a second success in Dublin. The Irishman was in relaxed mood seeing off both Subhankar Dey (IND) and Anton Kaisti (FIN) to book his quarter final spot and accredits his good form to being in the right mental place and enjoying his time on court.

The Irishman was instrumental in team Irelands qualification for the European mixed team championships back in November and Evans looks to have brought that form to the new NIA in Dublin this week for his home international.

“To play at home is always the greatest feeling” commented Evans to Badminton Europe after his round two win. “I have had a lot of attention after the Olympics and that experience has helped me also deal with the pressures of trying to play well at my home event. I am just enjoying my time on court and the fire to play is still burning inside me. For me this week it is about enjoying the experience and taking each game as it comes”

As we enter the business end of the tournament Evans will now take on his first Asian opponent after Kuo Ching Hung beat top seed Hsu Jen Hao.

4 Danes in last eight of women’s singles

As expected Denmark’s women’s singles team are starting to dominate the draw with four players making the last eight in Dublin. While Mia Blichfeldt went down in a close three set second round, top seed Line Kjaersfeldt (pictured above), Natalia Koch Rohde, Scottish Open GP champion Mette Poulsen and youngster Julie Dawall Jakobsen lead the assault on the women’s singles draw.

With only Koch Rohde in the bottom half the odds are stacked high on at least one Dane getting to the final. In tomorrow’s quarter final Kjaersfeldt plays Jakobsen with the winner eyeing a possible semi-final against Poulsen.

England will look to upset the odds with both Fontaine Chapman and qualifier Panuga Riou making the quarter finals with Finland’s Nanna Vainio enjoying a return to form to book her first quarter final since the Rio Olympics.

After Scott Evans got the home fans cheering early in the day it was very late in the evening before the home nation tasted further success with Sam and Joshua Magee booking their quarter final spot in the men’s doubles.

Sam Magee will only have men’s doubles to concentrate on now after going down as top seeds in the mixed doubles alongside sister Chloe.
