Last week, Terme Olimia in the city of Podčetrtek, Slovenia, was the centre of Badminton Europe’s biggest event to date. The 2016 European Senior Championships was concluded Sunday September 25, after seven days and 1.373 matches.
The big winners of the Senior Championships in Europe, September 18-24, were England, Denmark, and Germany, with respectively 34, 33, and 24 medals.
An impressive overtake, despite the fact that 36 Member Associations participated. More than half of the medals (91) out of 160 were divided among only the three above mentioned nations.
The tables below show an overview of the medalists in all categories and age groups:
One of the ‘small’-winning nations is Scotland with a total of three medals. Christine Black was Scotland’s star of the European Senior Championships in Slovenia with gold in the 60+ women’s doubles and 55+ mixed doubles.
But Black missed out on a golden treble when the second seed lost the 60+ women’s singles 21-11, 21-14 against England’s top seed Christine Crossley.
In the opposite side of the scale, we find England as the dominant of the tournament taking 34 medals in total. With seven of them being of gold, Badminton England must be feeling satisfied with the result.
The German squad was by far the biggest attending, despite their chances and the impressive amount of 24 medals, it was not enough to reach the big winners, England and Denmark.
Denmark's general dominance in the sport was also evident in Slovenia, especially in men's double +65 where four out of four medals in that category where Danish.
Other than that, Denmark took six gold medals, one of them won by triple world champion in 2015, Gitte Sommer. She won her first European title in women's single +45.
She had the chance to take the title in women’s double +45 with Anne Birgitte Nielsen, as well, but lost - 18-21, 21-14, 21-18 - to Dorota Grzejdak and Barbara Kulanty from Poland. Assuring Poland of its second medal, only one of gold.
One of the main characters, who was presented in the last article took home medals, as well.

That is something that lies in the atmosphere surrounding the Senior Championships, and it is an event we are very proud to organize.
