Hans-Kristian Vittinghus is probably not one for superstition. But considering his results on home soil there was definitely some kind of bad karma in the air. In the last eight years, the 29-year-old Dane has always lost his first round matches at the prestigious Yonex Denmark Open Superseries.

With his 21-16, 21-17 victory (48 minutes) over Korea’s Lee Dong Keun, Vittinghus finally broke the home curse and marched into the second round of the 650.000 Dollars Superseries Premier tournament in Odense.

“Huge win for me tonight! After losing the first round in Yonex Denmark Open presented by Danisa for the past 7 years in a row I finally managed to get past this hurdle today! It's been such a tough mental battle for me, but today I executed my plan really well and handled all the thoughts in a great way”, he wrote on his official Facebook page.

A delighted Vittinghus: "Obviously a big relief ..."

Vittinghus will now face world number one Chen Long. “It's obviously a big relief, but I'm also very happy with the level I showed on court today. Hopefully I can build on this performance tomorrow where all the pressure will be off as I'm playing the best player in the world at the moment, Chen Long! Can't wait to get on court at 20.45 CET and feel the amazing support from the crowd once again.”

His compatriots Viktor Axelsen and Jan Ø. Jørgensen, who won the tournament in 2010, are joining Vittinghus in the second round. Axelsen, the number six seed, beat England’s Rajiv Ouseph in two games 21-16, 21-19 and will face Korea’s Son Wan Ho next. Axelsen, who has a negative record (0-2) against Wan Ho, said after the match: “I can't wait to play again tomorrow. It is always amazing support here.”

2014 European Champion Jørgensen eased past Wang Zhengming of China 21-17, 21-9. The Dane is battling back after a heavy stomach infection that sidelined him for all tournaments after the World Championships in Jakarta. Jørgensen, the world number two and second seed, will play unseeded Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia on Thursday for a place in Friday's quarter-finals.

Marin comfortably passes first Odense test

It was not just a normal first round victory for World Champion Carolina Marin today. Against her Chinese opponent Yu Sun of China, the Spaniard had lost the previous two meetings. Marin - playing in just her second tournament since the World Championships - needed just 43 minutes to see off the 11th-ranked Yu Sun. Marin will face Denmark’s Mette Poulsen next. The latter beat HSU Ya Ching of Taiwan 22-20, 21-15.

Meanwhile, Danish women’s singles hope Line Kjærsfeldt made it through to the last 16 after beating Taiwan's Pai Yu Po 21-15, 21-17. She next plays fifth-seeded Wang Shixian of China.
