Spain's Carolina Marin won the women's singles title at the Australian Open Super Series (750.000 US Dollars) on Sunday. The current world champion and third seeded Marin got the better of China's former world No.1 and fifth seeded Shixian Wang 22-20, 21-18 in 58 minutes in the final at the Sydney Olympic Park.

It was a big week for the young Spaniard, who beat South Korea’s world no. 7 Sung Ji-Hyun 21-13, 21-14 to reach Sunday’s final after losing to India’s Saina Nehwal in last year’s tournament decider. The Sydney victory is Marin's third Superseries title in 2015.

World no. 1 Chen Long was taken to three games before downing Denmark’s shuttler Viktor Axelsen to win the Australian Open. The Chinese star defeated world no. 9 Axelsen 21-12, 14-21, 21-18 in one hour and 17 minutes. Axelsen, 21, beat five-time world champion Lin Dan in the opening round.

The Australian Open is the fifth event of the BWF World Superseries circuit and counts towards qualifying for next year’s Rio Olympics.
