While Finland’s Ville Lång once again stole the limelight at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow it was Danish men’s doubles duo Mathias Christiansen and David Daugaard who received most of the knowledgeable plaudits as the young Danes lifted their first Grand Prix title without dropping a set the entire week.

The Danes have gone from strength to strength after winning silver medal at the 2013 European Junior Championships and in today’s final controlled the match from start to finish against Germany’s Beck and Heinz. The Danes took the opening set 21-13 and after a tentative start to the second game took 5 points in a row at a crucial time after the interval before running out easy winners 21-17 in the second game.

“This is what we train for twice a day. We train hard to win and winning big tournaments like this is why we put in the work we do day in day out.” Said Daugaard after the victory.

Magic Lang the comeback king

Ville Lang proved once again that the match is not over until it is over by saving four match points in the second game against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei to take his second Scottish Open title after last lifting the title in 2006 back when the Scottish Open was still an international challenge tournament.

The Finnish star, backed by a packed Emirates Arena, ran his opponent into the ground in the deciding set to seal his 14 senior international title in what has been an illustrious career.

“It is a great feeling to win in front of these fantastic supporters. I could feel them behind me throughout the whole match and that is why I love to come to Glasgow year after year” said the happy Finn.

Blair & Bankier go back to back on home soil

Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier lifted back to back titles against emerging Danish pair Nohr & Thygesen after weathering the early storm against the Danes. The match was finely balanced at 16-16 in the opening games before the experienced Scots came through 21-18 to the delight of the home crowd. The Scots led from start to finish in the second set to round of a perfect tournament for them.

Like Daugaard and Christiansen, Bulgaria women’s doubles duo Stefani & Gabriela Stoeva lifted their first Grand Prix title defeating new English doubles pairing Olver & Smith. The Bulgarians steamrolled all before them this week in Glasgow and like the Danes did not drop a set en route to the title.

Sayaka Sato will have tainted memories of her last trip to UK shores. Many will remember her heartbreak and subsequent floods of tears against Tine Baun of Denmark in the London Olympics after injuring her ankle.

With those memories firmly behind her Sato saw off the spirited first set challenge of Spain’s Beatriz Corrales before lifting the title in two games in front of the appreciative crowd.
