Primorye Vladivostok lifted an historic hat trick of European club titles this afternoon in Amiens, France defeating local hosts BC Chambly Oise 4-1 and in doing so joined Denmark’s Gentofte BK as the only club in the tournaments history to win 3 in a row.

Vladivostok were overwhelming favourites coming into the tournament and brushed all opponents aside in the group stages. After coming up against the stiff resistance of AIX Universite in the semi-final the Russian champions gave a defiant display of world class badminton in today’s final against Chambly.

Vladimir Ivanov, the European bronze medallist, got the Russians off to a perfect started controlling the first men’s singles from start to finish against Thomas Rouxel. The Frenchman made a good start in each of the games but was soon overcome by the power and diversity of Ivanov’s game as the Russian won 21-9 21-19.

In a must win game for the hosts, Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour gave Chambly an early scare losing the opening game to Olga Golovanova after a traditional slow start by the Scot. Golovanova had a healthy 17-10 lead in the opening game before Gilmour found her grove and almost snatched the opener going down 21-19.

The writing was on the wall for Golavanova and just as she did at Spanish international one month ago Gilmour came powering back to take the second and deciding set to leave Chambly with a glimmer of hope going into the remainder of the matches.

“As usual I got off to a terrible start and felt awful on the court. But midway through the opening set I kick started my game and even though I still lost the first I felt good going into the second game after a good run of points.” Said the Scot after her victory.

The European men’s doubles champions were next on court for the reigning champions and Ivanov followed up his singles win with a well-crafted victory alongside Ivan Sozonov over Robert Mateusiak and Bastian Kersaudy.

“We were not at our very best today as we played a lot of matches this week. But I am still happy to win the point for the team as we want to win three in a row for our club in this tournament” said Sozonov after their doubles win.

2012 Olympic bronze medallist Nina Vislova was next on court alongside her Chinese partner Zhang Yeqi. The Russians, as expected, blew away the challenge of Danckers and Pancasari leaving the Russians within one match of retaining their title.

Enter one of the queens of European badminton over the past decade and in a somewhat fitting tribute to her world class talents it fell to Valeria Sorokina and partner Ivan Sozonov to lift the title for Vladivostok against the crack Chambly pairing of Matuesiak and Gilmour.

Sorokina was outstanding and dictated much of the play and the Chambly pair were left feeding on crumbs for much of the match.

The Russians took the mixed doubles in two games and with it the fourth points needed from a seven match schedule to lift the title for the third year running.

After a two year spell in the France next year’s edition of the European Club Championships will also be in France before moving to Lublin in Poland.
