The strongest European team in the Thomas Cup took their third ever win in a team event against China.

Denmark knew that the last year’s Thomas Cup runner-ups would be no easy opponents to face, and the team had the World Number One to get the clash started. Lu Guang Zu fought hard to get his team the first win, but Viktor Axelsen got to remain superior in the last two games, 17-21, 21-10, 21-9.

What followed for the Danes were two losses, first from Kim Astrup/ Mathias Christiansen who were defeated by Liu Yu Chen/ Ou Xuan Yi, and then from Anders Antonsen who could not get the win despite taking the clash against Li Shi Feng to three games.

Denmark was 1-2 down and the pressure was now on Anders Skaarup Rasmussen/ Frederik Søgaard to pull through against He Ji Ting/ Zhou Hao Dong. The strong duo delivered, in straight games, and so it meant that the fifth match would decide who would come out victorious.

The fierce clash between the two powerful nations had their last match of the late night between Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus and Weng Hong Yang. The 36-year-old Dane was ready to give everything he had.

- I wasn’t feeling too tired, the adrenalin was pumping. I’m not sure how many Thomas Cup matches I have left in me, so I really wanted to enjoy this one and give it everything, Vittinghus said to BWF.

Vittinghus got the win for Denmark, 16-21, 21-19, 21-18. This is their third victory against China in a team event, an achievement that clearly means a lot for the team and can give them an extra push of energy and motivation towards their next battle.

- For us, it was really a symbolic win that we could defeat China. We don’t do that too often, it’s the third time ever. We haven’t beaten them for 24 years. It’s important to show that we can beat them.
