For the first time the Dutch and Russian men’s teams will step onto the podium on Sunday after the 2020 European Men’s Team Championships.

Mark Caljouw took the lead for the Netherlands against England winning in straight games, 21-16 21-11 against Toby Penty. Joran Kweekel followed up winning the second men’s singles 21-11 9-21 21-18 against Alex Lane, before England got their game going.

In the deciding men’s doubles Dutch Ruben Jille and young Ties van der Lecq faced Harry Huang and Tom Wolfenden, and the Dutch favourites got the job done.

The world number 132 won 21-14 18-21 21-12, and the Netherlands thereby won their first ever medal at the European Men’s Team Championships.

- It sounds amazing. We are really really happy that we made it, because we knew we had a decent chance today, especially when we saw the lineup. But to do it in the last match at 2-2. It is an amazing feeling, Ruben Jille said.

Historical moment for Russia
Also medalling for the first time is Russia, who beat Bulgaria 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Nikita Khakimov and Vladimir Ivanov secured the victory winning the final men’s doubles.

- I am so proud of the Russian team. We are really happy and we are also happy about our performance, Nikita Khakimov said.

- I totally agree. We made history, and that is very good for us and our team. Also to do it such an amazing arena, Vladimir Ivanov said.
