All coming together nicely for Antonsen

The conditions on one of the biggest stages in the Badminton world, the Indonesia Open, have been tough this week. A significant drift and a slow shuttle have resulted in many seeds being knocked-out. In the Men’s Singles for example, only one is left standing, fourth seed Chou Tien Chen.

So, what does it take to adapt to the conditions, and fight for the World Tour 1000 event in Jakarta? For one, with the shuttle being hard to put away, you need great stamina and patience. Persevering and waiting for the right moments. And subsequently enough oxygen getting to your brain to be always aware of the drift, picking and adapting your shots accordingly.

All of which has come together almost perfectly for Danish sensation Anders Antonsen. He displayed all of this greatly against Thammasin in his two game first round win. Then began brightly in round two against Shi Yuqi, who was a semi-finalist here last year. But Shi sustained a nasty ankle sprain, forcing a retirement. Meaning Antonsen was effectively given a bye for what was bound to be a tough match.

Meanwhile, Lee Zii Jia had a colossal match with Chen Long, going the distance, but just going in favour of the young Malaysian. When facing Antonsen in the quarter final today, it seemed that his defensive masterclass against Chen Long was continuing. However, the hour’s different in court time between the players eventually showed. And Antonsen efficiently and ruthlessly dispatched him, with nothing more to give in his legs, ending 21-16, 21-11.

How far can Antonsen go? With Wong Wing Ki, who was promoted from the reserve list, awaiting in the semi-final. Whom he has never played. And Chou Tien Chen and Kantaphon Wangcharoen in the other semi-final. Add in how well Antonsen has dealt with the conditions, we will all be watching in anticipation to see if he can double up on his 2019 Indonesia Masters win and grab the prestigious Indonesia Open.
