Viktor Axelsen has today revealed that he has suffered yet another setback as he prepared to play in Indonesia and Japan.

The best ranked European player will be out of action for the foreseeable future after suffering an injury to his leg which is causing pain.

More bad luck for Axelsen

The former World Champion revealed on social media how frustrated he was to have to share news of a setback, again.

- It’s with great sadness that I inform you that I’ve been experiencing persistent pain in my leg for a few weeks now, Axelsen posted on his social media account.

- After being assessed by multiple specialists, I’ve been advised not to compete in any tournaments at this moment.

Axelsen is determined though, to return to the badminton court in the strongest possible way, but knows he needs to bide his time.

Axelsen was also out of the European Games at the beginning of the month due to health reasons.

- Coming off asthma issues which prevented me from competing at the European Games, I was extremely looking forward to being back on match courts - especially competing in Jakarta and Tokyo which are two of my favourite cities, he continued.

- I’m beyond disappointed and do not know how long I will be out. But don’t worry, I will do all I can come back as soon as possible, better and stronger than before! Thanks for all of your support, he added.

Looking at the positives

This will probably not affect Axelsen’s chances of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

However, it could slightly affect his chances of a good seeding position at the multi-sport event, depending on how long the 25-year old is out for.

Axelsen competed in both the Indonesia Open and Japan Open meaning that he would need to defend points in both, which now he will be unable to do.
