In only three days, badminton will be getting underway at the biggest multi-sports event in Europe. Airi Mikkelä from Finland will be looking to advance in the Women’s Singles.

Finishing the world ranking as number 103, Airi Mikkelä is qualified for her second European Games. After being knocked out in the round of 16 at the last edition of the event, the 26-year old has now the chance to advance further in the tournament.

- It was a great event in Baku, so I am really looking forward to Minsk. I am sure that the atmosphere will be awesome, Mikkelä said.

- The Olympic qualification makes it even more intense, she added.

This time, badminton players are able to collect valuable world ranking points for the 2020 Olympics at the European Games.

With Yvonne Li from Germany, Mikkelä has a strong opponent to face in the group stage. However, she would also be reaching the knock-out stage by finishing the group as second.

The third multi-sports event for Mikkelä

The European Games 2015 are not the only multi-sports event that Mikkelä has experienced. In 2010, she also played at the Youth Olympics in Singapore.

- I really enjoy these big events. It is awesome to live in the athlete's village, meet other athletes and see other sports as well, Mikkelä revealed.

Finnish Singles in Minsk

Next to Mikkelä, the Men's Singles player, Eetu Heino, will be competing for Finland in Minsk.

- I am positive that we have good chances. We are training hard with the Finnish national team. I believe that hard work pays off, Mikkelä stated.
