The World Academy of Sport (WAoS) Administrators and Event Management Courses took place on the 6th and 7th December in Chisinau, Moldova with participants from 16 Member Associations. The courses were organized by Badminton Europe (BEC) with logistical support from the host, the Moldovian Badminton Federation.

The Courses

Prior to the face-to-face courses in Chisinau, all participants had to complete an online module for their respective areas (administration or event management). This exercise enabled the courses´ presenters to know the participants and situation of their federations better before the face-to-face courses.

The presenters for the courses were Senior Manager at BEC, Jimmy Andersen who presented to the event managers, Tania Teoh, Development Manager who presented to the administrators and Rasmus Bech, Communication Manager who presented to both groups about communication. The courses took place alongside the 2018 European Mixed Team Championships Qualification group containing Russia, Scotland, Ukraine and Moldova.

Administrators´ Course

The areas presented and discussed during the two days were:

• Constitution, governance and administration
• Strategic and operational planning
• Commercial strategies and planning
• Communication strategies and planning
• Development tools and opportunities

ʺThe two full days in Chisinau went with just a glimpse of an eye. All the administrators made the course more fun and valuable when they were extremely hands on for every task given to them. It is also very motivating to present to a group of enthusiastic administrators who have the same goal as BEC; to grow badminton in Europe. I am already looking forward to the next edition and hope that more administrators from our Member Associations will apply for the next edition next year,” stated Tania Teoh, Manager at BEC.

Event Management Course

Participants went through the following topics in the event management group:

• Events and competition structures
• Key considerations in event management
• The foundation of a local organizing committee
• Planning and delivering events
• Event evaluation reporting process

ʺIt was truly a pleasure working with the 10 participants during the two days. They all showed eagerness and willingness to participate, to learn and to share good knowledge amongst each other. During the practical session on Thursday, where they built the venue for the qualification group in Moldova, they showed their experience and organizing skills – and I believe we saw great cooperation amongst the group. And in the classroom sessions, there were some very detailed and fruitful discussions – which clearly showed that we have excellent event organizers all around Europe,” expressed Jimmy Andersen, Senior Manager at BEC.

Quotes from participants

ʺThe workshops in groups and in pairs were one of the keys which made me improve my knowledge and above all, my concern of speaking in public in a foreign language. I really enjoyed the way that Tania was teaching us too,” expressed Maria Carmen Casermeiro from Spain.

ʺIt was great because we were a small group of 8 and despite the small group, everybody could speak,” shared Matevz Srekl from Slovenia.
