The Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently released its BWF Para-Badminton 2019 – 2020 calendar. Next year will be a special year because it is the first year that all elite para-badminton players gain points to qualify to the first ever edition of para-badminton at the Paralympic Games in 2020.

The Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020 Qualifying tournaments includes:
  • BWF sanctioned Para-Badminton Internationals from 1 January 2019 to 29 March 2020
  • BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, Basel 2019

- There could potentially be additional tournaments added to the calendar for 2019 and 2020 at a later date. The current calendar is not the final list of tournaments, said Syahmi Sabron, BWF Junior Tournament Series Manager.

Badminton has been allocated 90 athlete slots across 14 medal events for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The 14 medal events for badminton offer opportunities for wheelchair players (6 medal events), standing players (7 medal events) and short stature players (1 medal event for men) to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

- It is tremendously interesting to see the revolution of para-badminton. The game is getting more and more competitive and the players´ levels are improving rapidly. Despite the changes, the development of para-badminton at grass root level is equally crucial. We need more people to get involved in para-badminton. High Performance and Development in para-badminton should compliment each other for the greater of the sport, emphasized Tania Teoh, BEC Manager who has been working with para-badminton at BEC since 2015.
