Denmark’s Mathias Boeand Carsten Mogensen came through a tough first round encounter 21-11, 22-20 against Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel at the Japan Open in Tokyo.

After taking the opening set with a strong start, Boe and Mogensen were involved in a tight tussle for the remainder of the contest. With both pairs exchanging leads, Lamsfuss and Seidel pulled away to a 17-14 and looked confident in taking this to a decider.

But the tournaments fifth seeded pair regrouped well, held their never when required and edged the second set 22-20 and move to the second round.

Their next opponents will be Netherlands’ very own Jelle Maas and Robin Tabeling. After a slow start that saw them 11-4 down in the first set to Chinese pair Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong, the Dutch pair turned it around and sealed the opener.

The second set saw Maas and Tabeling claim an early lead, maintain it and complete the straight sets victory 21-18, 21-16.

Meanwhile, Denmark’s eighth seed men’s doubles pair of Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen made quick work of Indonesia’s Ricky Karandasuwardi and Angga Pratama in their first round encounter 21-13, 21-11.Producing an early lead in both sets made in it an uneventful session for the strong Danish pair.

Sadly, there were some tough losses for Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding as well as Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov.

Both pairs suffered narrow straight set defeats to pairs from Chinese Taipei and Indonesia respectively.

Stoeva’s recover with strong finish

There was also some success in the women’s doubles, as Bulgaria’s Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva came from a set down to defeat Japan’s Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao 15-21, 21-11, 21-9.

After winning the first six points of the contest, the Stoeva sisters gradually lost their early lead and the Japanese pair levelled the set at 11-11. That loss of momentum continued and Fukuman and Yonao took the first set 21-15.

Despite that setback, the Bulgarian pair began the second set well and never looked back. Winning just over two-thirds of the points after the first set completed an impressive comeback and safe passage to the second round.

The same could not be said for Russia’s Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova. A comfortable 21-9, 21-12 defeat to Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara made it an early exit.
