From 16th to 21st of June 2017, the first ever European Badminton Schools Championship was held in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Organized by the International School Federation (ISF) and the French Secondary School Sport Federation (UNSS), this event was an opportunity to gather three scales of the badminton community: The Badminton World Federation (BWF), Badminton Europe(BEC) and the French Badminton Federation (FFBaD).

150 pupils from 12 different countries (Russia, Latvia, Scotland, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Germany, Croatia, Bulgaria, France, Sweden and Czech Republic) came to Clermont-Ferrand to take part in this double event competition. The players were divided into two competitions; a School Team competition (players from the same school), and, a National selected Team Competition (players from the same country but not mandatory from the same school).

After a nice opening ceremony on Saturday morning with several shows from artists of the region, the group stages started in a nice and warm atmosphere. 7 courts were installed in this big hall and the organisers made sure that the players and coaches were feeling comfortable. The group stages lasted until Monday.

Besides this great sport event, the participants were able to take part in different cultural and educational activities, consisting of a visit to the Michelin factory, the Rugby Museum and the cathedral. Moreover, the competition gave students from all over Europe the opportunity to play a role in the V2S project (Volunteering in School Sport), in cooperation with the Erasmus Project.

24 volunteers, in the ages of 14-16, were selected to take part in various school sport events from January 2017 to March 2018. During the European Badminton Schools Championship, those actors participated in different workshops, involving the young players, in various topics such as; education through sport, comprehending and understanding a physical disability, and others subjects always addressing the importance of participation and responsibilities.

On the Sunday evening, all the stakeholders of the competition took part in the Nations’ party; a cultural and culinary exchange. Each country prepared meals and performed with dances, songs or films. A wonderful way to share good values and to learn from each other.

The final rounds of the competition, quarter -finals to finals, were all played on Tuesday 20 June.
