The final circuit tournament of the calendar year concluded this morning in Istanbul, Turkey and it proved to be a very productive days’ work for local players with three gold medals from five events. As expected Ozge Bayrak and Neslihan Yigit lifted the women’s doubles title while Cemre Fere’s women’s singles victory threw up the biggest surprise of the day.

Things got off to a great start for the home nation with Melih Turgut and Fatma Nur Yavuz taking the mixed doubles title beating third seeds Alimov and Davletova of Russia in two games.

Fere’s victory soon followed consigning Spain’s Clara Azurmendi to a second consecutive final defeat after losing out in Italy just 6 days ago. The Turk and Spaniard traded the opening sets and the decisive move from Fere came very early in the deciding set where she won 8 points in a row to lead 9-1.

There was no way back for Azurmendi and those 8 points proved to be the difference in the end with Fere lifting the title with a 21-12 win in the deciding rubber.

Fatma Nur Yavuz attempt at a double on home soil was thwarted by top seeds Yigit & Bayrak in the women’s doubles final. Yavuz partnered Kader Inal against the tournament’s hot favourites but were no match for the Yigit and Bayrak with the top seeds taking the title in two games to go one better than their runners up spot in 2015.

Dane rounds of productive 2016 with second title

Dane Patrick Bjerregaard took his second International Series title of the year beating Hungary’s Gergely Krausz to the Turkish title. In seven tournament appearances this year Bjerregaard has had two victories, 1 runners up spot, 3 semi-finals and a quarter final to his name. A decent return for the Dane as he heads towards the top 100 in the world.

In the final match of the day French pair Vanmael Heriau & Florent Riancho took the men’s doubles title in the unseeded final against Pradzinski & Rudzinski of Poland.
