Estonia’s Raul Must continued his good form this afternoon in Almere as he maintained his remarkable record of reaching a minimum of the semi-final of each of his last four tour events. Must was runner up at the Russian Grand Prix and a win in Bulgaria coupled with a semi-final in Prague two weeks ago has marked the Estonian out as the form player on tour this season. 

In today’s quarter final at the Yonex Dutch Open Must displayed his growing stature in the game with a well-crafted three set win over India’s R.M.V Gurusaidutt. The Estonian lost the opening set 21-19 but Must is a confident player right now and came right back to win in three games to advance to yet another semi-final. 

Must will now play Emil Holst of Denmark in tomorrow’s semi-final after the Dane stifled his Malaysian opponent Teck Zhi Soo to win 21-5 21-12

“I knew the tactic I needed to play against Teck today and it’s a good feeling to be actually winning again as it has been a bad spell since the European Games in Baku at the beginning of the summer” said Holst. 

Kjaersfeldt ends Magee’s good run.

There have been many exciting battles between the Danish and Irish number 1 women’s singles players over the past years and today’s quarter final between Line Kjaersfeldt and Chloe Magee lived up to that reputation. 

Magee looked to be suffering the effects of her marathon second round match in the opening game trailing 11-4 but the fighting Irish spirit took Magee to a first game win 22-20. Kjaersfeldt, who is also known for her never say die attitude, controlled the second game to level up with a 21-17 win. 

The third game was an energy sapping affair with never more than a handful of points between the players. Trailing 16-13 Magee managed to transfer the deficit into two match points and it looked like the Irish woman was on her way to the semi-final leading 20-18.

However Kjaersfeldt remained focused and somehow turned the tide winning four points in a row to take the match 22-20 as both players fell to their knees exhausted by their exertions on court. 

“I knew today would be a big battle. Towards the end of the third game we were both tired for sure but I have something in me that never says give up which took me through with two match points against me” said Kjaersfeldt. 

Karin Schnasse continued her good run in The Netherlands beating Linda Zetchiri in two games even after a scare early in the opening game.

“I twisted my knee early in the match and Linda got a good start on me as I was thinking about that all the time. But I knew after a while it was nothing serious so I fought hard to come back into that first set and took it in the end and managed to win in two games”

Piek & Muskens comfortable on home soil.

Selena Piek and Eefje Muskens reaffirmed their outright status as tournament favourites with a convincing two game win over Brown and Robertshaw of England. The top seeds have been untroubled so far in this tournament and appear extremely comfortable on home soil this week which is a rare treat for the world number 9 pairing. 

“We had a pretty good feeling on court today and we needed to be sharp as the English girls can sometimes be a handful.” Said Muskens.

“It was good to win that match in two as it means we have conserved some energy for tomorrow as against the Germans we will have to step it up another level if we want to make the final” commented Piek

At the bottom half of the draw Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva continued their assault on the podium beating Efler and Kaepplein of Germany in two games.
